Join our talented presenters as they share projects developed following their Orff Levels’ experiences.
Under the mentorship of Nikki Cox, QOSA is excited to be continuing this presenter training initiative.

The Go Anywhere Any Time Machine
Join Deb in her marvellous machine and set off on a journey to who knows where! Experience dramatic storytelling, movement and vocables, body percussion and instruments and finally arrive at your version of the destination. Links to the Australian Curriculum with an example assessment task and actual student responses will be available for use and discussion if time permits.
Sakura
With this beautiful, traditional Japanese song as our starting point, we will learn the Orff techniques that will allow you to create possibilities for your students to bloom just like the Sakura trees. We will improvise and compose in the intriguing Japanese pentatonic scale with xylophones and recorders, finally utilising those Bb bars on your xylophones! Links to the Australian curriculum will be provided and discussed. Please bring your recorder(s) to experience the fullness of the Orff ensemble. (We will have some available if you don’t have one.)
Saturday Night!
Everybody loves Saturday night! Using this theme as the basis of the unit, we will delve into movement, ukulele playing and the essential Orff Pedagogy and Orchestration. No experience needed for ukulele playing, as we will learn this instrument from scratch and use it in combination with untuned and tuned percussion. (We will have ukuleles available if you don't have your own.)
Deb is currently the Junior School Music Teacher and Choral Director at Nambour Christian College on the Sunshine Coast. She is the current President of QOSA, having served on the committee in various roles since 2013 . She has been a primary classroom teacher, secondary maths teacher, stay-at-home mum and playgroup convenor, and is always seeking creative ways to do things. Deb had her first experience with the Schulwerk in 2011, after a sideways step into classroom music teaching required some upskilling. The pure joy of making music in such an accessible way to all students has led Deb to continue her journey with Orff, completing Level 4 in 2022. Her passion for music as an innate human instinct that we are all capable of, drives Deb to provide her students with opportunities to create in every lesson. This is Deb’s first workshop for QOSA.
Justin has been a music educator for more than 20 years, working in international, private and public schools. He has conducted training for music teachers throughout Asia and has contributed to music curriculum development in Singapore. He also ran his own music school in Singapore for a few years before moving to Australia in 2016. After attending the Orff Schulwerk Summer School in Salzburg, Austria, he completed all 4 levels of the Orff Schulwerk Teacher training Courses and has also completed Kodaly's Teaching Courses for Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary. Justin is currently teaching Primary Music at Parklands Christian College and this will be his first workshop presentation for QOSA.
Ian was first associated with Orff when he attended an Orff conference in Sydney in the early 1990’s. At this time he began his teaching career in Moura, a small country Queensland town. From there, Ian moved into administration roles in small country communities but found himself more settled in teaching Music. He became more involved in Orff in 2010 when he completed Level 1 and in the subsequent years found himself on the QOSA committee for a period of time. He has since completed levels 2 and 3 and increasingly found himself involved in ukulele playing. Ian currently teaches at Pallara State School. Ian has returned to join the QOSA committee recently and is keen to be sharing what he has learned to encourage other teachers in this workshop presentation.
